Our History
The Alpine Hotel’s story began before the 1860s when it was first established on Growlers Creek. The original pine building featured 12 rooms, a stable, kitchen, and an outhouse. Over the years, the hotel changed hands several times, with notable owners including Thomas McCarrick, James Spaulding, Mr. Cathcart, and Mr. McBride.
In 1868, Alex Cathcart relocated the hotel to the township of Bright, marking a new chapter in its history. The current brick building was constructed in 1890 by Captain John McFarlaine. Throughout the 20th century, the hotel underwent various renovations while maintaining its heritage feel, with major updates in 1990-1991 and 2021-2023.
In 2006, the hotel expanded to include an outdoor beer garden, creating a modern and inviting space for guests to enjoy.
FAMILY OWNED + RUN
In 2017, Neville and Susan Jacob, owners of The Jacob Group of Companies, purchased the Alpine Hotel. With a deep appreciation for the hotel’s heritage and a vision for its future, they continue to refurbish and enhance the property, ensuring it remains a family-friendly destination for all who visit Bright, Victoria.
